We are excited to announce the completion of our collaboration with Al Naeem Magazine and Ffotogallery, Cardiff’s renowned art gallery. “Faadi / Y Stafell Fyw / The Living Room,” an intergenerational photography and fashion project, has successfully captured the essence of intimate family settings within Somali Welsh homes.
The exhibition was a true celebration of culture, featuring a diverse range of images. From young local models elegantly adorned in bridal wear to community members showcasing cultural clothing like Hidyaah Dhaqan and Diraq, the exhibition beautifully showcased the richness of Somali heritage. It also explored themes of brotherhood, soft masculinity, and the traditional dance of Ciyaar Somali.
This extraordinary collaboration brought together Asma Elmi, the founder and creative director of Al Naeem, and Young Queens, an arts group for young Welsh Somali women from Cardiff. Al Naeem Magazine focuses on Black and Muslim fashion, photography, and art, while Young Queens is a group founded by Hayaat Women’s Trust to nurture the talents of young Welsh Somali girls. The project was made possible with funding support from the Heritage Lottery Foundation.
The exhibition ran from April 28th to May 11th at Ffotogallery, where visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty and cultural significance of Somali Welsh homes. The event was filled with captivating moments that celebrated the rich heritage and artistic expressions within the Somali Welsh community.

In addition to the exhibition, Young Queens offers a creative platform for young Welsh Somali girls aged between 10 and 14. Through scriptwriting, poetry, and performance, we empower them to explore their Welsh Somali heritage and express themselves through traditional Somali art forms.
We are proud to have showcased the beauty of Somali Welsh homes and the rich cultural heritage they hold. This collaboration has been a testament to the power of art and community in breaking barriers and fostering understanding. Together, we continue to create spaces that honor and celebrate diversity within our community.
